Tena's Story

At Headwaters we are blessed to have several volunteer groups!
April 7-13 is National Volunteer Week, a time when Canadians take pause to reflect on the selfless contributions of people across the country.

At Headwaters we are blessed to have several volunteer groups including Headwaters Health Care Auxiliary, Friendship Gardens, Board of Directors, Patient Family Advisors and Spiritual Care Chaplains. Tena has been part of the latter group, serving as a Lay Chaplain, for over 30 years.

Proudly sharing a photo taken in the old hospital, when she received her Chaplaincy Certificate, in 1992 Tena said “If you can, you do. It’s just that simple.”

Before retiring, Tena worked full-time as a nurse in a long-term care home; spending her professional time caring for seniors and personal time caring for patients, families, caregivers and staff at the hospital.
Members of the Spiritual Care team provide a supportive, listening presence; responding with compassion to emotional and spiritual distress. Chaplains help in the search for meaning, purpose and value during a hospital stay.

For Tena, her favorite moments at Headwaters, have been when she is getting ready to begin volunteering. She always starts her day in the Emergency Department. Tena said “You just never know what you're going to encounter in the Emergency. I have gone through so much with patients and staff. Moments that I really treasure.”

The most impactful moment for Tena was when a mother and young daughter were brought into the Emergency Department after being in an accident. Watching the pair hold hands across stretchers left a lasting impression. Tena felt privileged to be part of their journey and offer prayer, support and comfort.
When asked what she would say to others interested in becoming part of the Spiritual Care Program at Headwaters Tena said “Go for it. It’s good for your soul.”

Thank you, Tena and all our volunteers at Headwaters, we simply couldn’t provide the level of care we do to our community without you.
