Shayla’s Story

Meet Shayla, Student Volunteer.
Shayla was born and raised in Orangeville. She began volunteering in September 2019 and quickly came to enjoy spending time here. You can typically find Shayla at the information desk where she helps patients and visitors who may have questions or need help navigating our hallways.

Shayla looks forward to being able to come back and support our hospital and when the time comes, she may try out working in the new Gift Shop inside the Joan and Paul Waechter Welcome Centre. When asked what inspired her to volunteer at HHCC, she explained that she has some friends that volunteer here. Her mom also spent some time volunteering at the hospital and loved it – and it felt like an easy choice!

One of her favorite things about volunteering at Headwaters is that she gets to meet so many people through her work. “Everyone is really nice and has a positive attitude. It’s great to be able to give back to the community,” she said. It also helps that she can get some homework during her down time at the information desk all while doing it all with friends!

Her most memorable moment so far was when she got to escort several visitors to a patient on D-Wing. “It was nice to see so many caring family and friends come in to make sure they were okay,” said Shayla.

Although Shayla is in grade 11, she has already put some thought into where she would like to attend post-secondary school. She is very interested in pursuing Engineering, possibly at McMaster University or Queens University because Math and Physics are her favourite subjects. She is also considering going to Laurier for Business however, there is still lots of time to decide!

When Shayla isn’t at school or volunteering for HHCC she works at McDonalds with lots of her friends. She also keeps busy playing rep hockey which she has been playing since she was in kindergarten.

We look forward to the time that Shayla and the rest of our wonderful volunteers can come back. We also look forward to seeing all that Shayla contributes!
