Headwaters Health Care Centre celebrates nurses during National Nursing Week and International Nurses Day

Headwaters celebrates our 281 nursing staff, including 27 new nurses this year, in recognition of their hard work and incredible teamwork alongside all our health care workers.

Nurses play a critical role in our health care system and are integral to the provision of high-quality, patient-centred care at Headwaters. Together with doctors, allied health, all staff, and volunteers, they’ve shown that they will do everything possible to care for those in need despite different challenges our health care system has faced.

Headwaters is deeply committed to supporting nurses and to implementing measures to increase and strengthen our workforce. With the rapidly changing technology and equipment in our health care system, we are committed to providing the necessary education and training for our nurses. Our hospital foundation has also created a Nursing Education Scholarship Fund to complement our training, education, and tuition assistance programs to further support nurses and their professional development.

With the recent success of focused nursing recruitment at the hospital, the Headwaters nursing team consists of both long-standing nurses and the next generation in the profession. Our diversity of experiences, perspective and skills creates a sustainable environment where nurses are constantly learning from one another to enhance safety, quality and care for patients, families and loved ones.

About National Nursing Week
Supplied by Canadian Nurses Association
In 1971, the International Council of Nurses designated May 12, the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, as International Nurses Day. In 1985, CNA members passed a resolution to begin negotiations with the federal government to have the week containing May 12 proclaimed as National Nurses Week annually. Soon after, the federal minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nurses Week. In 1993, the name was changed to National Nursing Week to emphasize the profession's accomplishments as a discipline.
