Each month we will be sharing stories of team members at HHCC; their history with the hospital and the transformative work they do every day to strengthen our culture and community. This month we celebrate Heather, Registered Nurse, E-Wing.
Lujan had no idea that her life would change so much overnight. “We live in rural Ontario in Dornoch, and thought being out here, we’d be safe from the virus,” she said.
Lujan’s husband works and lives outside her community five days a week because of the long commute. One day she said he returned home earlier than expected because he felt sick. He had many of the symptoms of the virus and he went to the COVID-19 at the Assessment Centre in Orangeville. He tested positive.
Shayla was born and raised in Orangeville. She began volunteering in September 2019 and quickly came to enjoy spending time here. You can typically find Shayla at the information desk where she helps patients and visitors who may have questions or need help navigating our hallways.
We celebrate Dr. Cormier, who has been a Family Physician at HHCC for 35 years.
Dr. Cormier grew up in St. John, New Brunswick where his father was a Dentist. In high school he began to consider following that same career path. However, his father expressed to him that, "If you don’t like being a Dentist, you are always stuck looking at people’s mouths." There are so many more avenues within medicine which influenced Dr. Cormier to pursue a career as a Family Physician.
The evening of July 11, 2019 was like any other for Shelburne resident Borys. He had been doing some work around the house and on his car, nothing out of the ordinary. Around 9:00 pm he was winding down for the evening and was having some indigestion, so he went downstairs to the kitchen, got a glass of milk and sat down in his chair to watch TV. His wife, Janet was in the next room. Without warning, Borys collapsed. What follows is a phenomenal story of first responders and how their everyday work changed the life of Borys and his family.
Tom, Chief of Dufferin County Paramedic Services has been a part of the Headwaters team for 35 years!
Tom was born and raised in Dufferin County and refers to himself as a “home town boy”. Growing up he was influenced by his Grandad Hugh, who in 1968 became the areas first full-time Paramedic. This was when the province first brought in provincial ambulances and at the time they were called Ambulance Drivers.
Our volunteers at HHCC are instrumental in our daily operations and make a huge difference in the lives of our patients, families, caregivers, and our staff. Truly inspiring, our youth volunteers often dedicate their time while balancing school and part-time jobs. We encourage you to recognize the hard work they do, and how important they are to our team.
This year Anne, Rehabilitation Clerk, celebrates her 35th Anniversary at Headwaters. In 1984, Anne started working in our Environmental Services Department and then went on to be part of the Registration Team supporting Physiotherapy and Diagnostic Imaging until finally transferring to her current role in Rehab/Ambulatory Care.
Dan, a member of our Materials Management Department has worked at Headwaters for 37 years. He started working at Headwaters (then Dufferin Area Hospital) in May 1982 as a part-time Porter. He had been working in a similar position elsewhere and knew someone who worked at the hospital who suggested he apply.
