Smiling Behind the Mask

Audrey is a dietary technician at our hospital, in this role she determines the nutritional needs of patients by speaking with them and reviewing their diet history.  

“I personalize a patient's menu based on their food preference or allergies. I also provide nutritional education and recommend supplements. My goal is to help patients lead a healthier and more productive lifestyle,” shared Audrey.  

During the pandemic daily meetings with the care team to discuss a patient’s progress transitioned to virtual and Audrey found this challenging. While it provided the opportunity to be more efficient it took away the human element of her function. She has missed the in-person connection with her colleagues.  

Audrey, prior to mask requirements being implemented at our hospital, could be found in the hallway or at her desk with a wonderful, welcoming smile and positive attitude. Her kind nature is something that has poured through computer screens at virtual meetings as well. 

Adapting to personal protective equipment also presented challenges from the patient point of view for Audrey. Patients new to our hospital may not be familiar with the team and the mask made it difficult to put them at ease, hear clearly, and ensure that the message being communicated was understood. 

“Meeting with patients wearing a mask and goggles on top of my own glasses has been restricting. Patients only get to see my eyes and not my facial expression,” shared Audrey.  

Audrey’s hope for the future is to take off the mask and goggles in a safe way and that, “We look back on this experience with a renewed appreciation of seeing one another's facial expressions. Smiles are priceless.”
