Guiding the Next Generation: Headwaters Preceptors Honoured for Outstanding Mentorship
Supporting the next generation of nurses takes dedication, compassion, and a genuine love of learning, qualities proudly demonstrated by two Headwaters preceptors who have recently been recognized for their outstanding commitment to student education.
Bobbi Jo Bannon and Kaitlyn Copeland have been selected by Georgian College as recipients of the Preceptor Award. As part of the Georgian College nursing program, students are invited to nominate preceptors who demonstrate exceptional dedication to nursing education and excellence in practice.
As preceptors, Bobbi Jo and Kaitlyn play a crucial role in guiding nursing students. They support students by teaching clinical skills, reinforcing patient safety, and integrating theory into real-world practice. Their mentorship helps students gain confidence and develop essential skills for their future careers.
Reflecting on her recognition, Bobbi Jo shared, “I was surprised and honoured to be recognized by my student. I’m so happy that they felt this was a valuable experience and were able to use this in their future practice.”
Bobbi Jo brings decades of experience to her role. She has worked at Headwaters for over 30 years as a registered nurse, beginning her education at Georgian College and later attending Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Over her three decades with Headwaters, Bobbi Jo has worked in many areas of the hospital and has spent the last 10 years in PACU.
Recalling what drew her to teaching, Bobbi Jo said, “I wanted to become a teacher at one point and in doing a placement I realized the school nurse had what I felt to be the best job. In being a preceptor, I have had the chance to meet some amazing students. This type of learning is beneficial to the student and me as we both learn. Through explaining, researching and discussion this experience has been rewarding.”
Kaitlyn has been part of the Headwaters team for just over 13 years, beginning on D-Wing, then moving to F-Wing, before joining the operating room team in 2019. Her nursing career has largely been focused on perioperative care. Kaitlyn studied at Georgian College and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from York University.
Kaitlyn shared what made this recognition especially meaningful to her.
“Being nominated by a student makes this especially meaningful because it reflects the trust and connection built during their learning experience. Supporting students as they develop confidence and skill in the operating room is something I value deeply and I am grateful to be recognized for that role,” said Kaitlyn.
Explaining her motivation for becoming a preceptor, Kaitlyn said, “I wanted to become a preceptor to be a role model, support and encourage the next generation of nurses. The operating room can be an intimidating environment for students, and I believe having a supportive, approachable preceptor can make a significant difference in their confidence, learning and overall experience."
Bobbi Jo and Kaitlyn’s recognition as Preceptor Award recipients is a testament to their dedication to teaching and their positive influence on the next generation of nurses. Headwaters Health Care Centre is proud to acknowledge their commitment to excellence, mentorship, and compassionate care.
