What it is: The BMD test is a painless way of measuring the concentration of minerals in the bones, and diagnosing and monitoring osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones are weaker than they should be and can break easily. A high BMD score indicates above average amounts of calcium and phosphates in the bones, while a below-normal bone mineral density can indicate a loss of bone mass, possibly from osteoporosis.
Benefits: BMD will accurately confirm or negate bone loss, whether from medication or degeneration. Learn more on
Osteoporosis Canada’s website.
Preparing for a BMD exam: Please discontinue calcium supplements, antacids, and multivitamins for 24 hours prior to your appointment.
