Tom, Chief of Dufferin County Paramedic Services has been a part of the Headwaters team for 35 years!

Tom was born and raised in Dufferin County and refers to himself as a “home town boy”. Growing up he was influenced by his Grandad Hugh, who in 1968 became the areas first full-time Paramedic. This was when the province first brought in provincial ambulances and at the time they were called Ambulance Drivers.

Inspired by his Grandad, Tom applied to become a paramedic at Shelburne District Hospital in 1983 when he was just 19 years old. Tom quickly moved up as the Manager/Chief of Shelburne District Hospital Ambulance Service in 1988 and then became the new Chief of Dufferin Caledon Ambulance Service in 1993. Which, has since become what we know today as Dufferin County Paramedic Service.

Over the span of his career Tom has delivered nine babies– the greatest highlights of the job! When asked what it is that makes working at Headwaters so great, without skipping a beat he stated, “The excellent staff and the comradery amongst the group”. The people and culture is great, which is a huge factor in keeping Tom here all these years.

He acknowledges that in this field it can be both rewarding and challenging to live and work in the same community. Despite these challenges, his colleagues continue to uplift, motivate, and support each other which all contributes to a great career.

Paul who is one of Tom’s long time colleagues states, “I have had the honor and pleasure of working with my friend and mentor for 35 years.” His passion and leadership is undoubtedly noticed by all those who have worked by his side.

At one-point Tom’s entire family, including his wife and four kids were all working for Headwaters Health Care Centre. It is clear that he has a positive influence on his kids and passion for helping others which extends to all members of his family.

His love for the community and his family is showcased through his job as well as through coaching hockey. Tom coached hockey for 25 years starting when his oldest son begun playing and continuing until his youngest son stopped playing. The most recent excitement for Tom was watching his daughter get married surrounded by his family and grandchildren.

In June 2019, Tom was the recipient of the Dr. David Scott Award which recognizes those who have invaluable contributions to the health and wellness of the Dufferin-Caledon community. This prestigious award was given to Tom at the Annual General Meeting and celebrates his progress and implementation of various community programs such as Advanced Care Paramedic Program and the Dufferin Situation Table.

As Chief, Tom takes pride in being able to guide his team and work to improve the paramedic services and the support for the community. In reference to his career he says he “still has some work to do yet”. He wants to continue to be a voice of advocacy in our community.

Thank you, Tom, for all your work and your unwavering commitment to our community.
