Open Message to the Community

It is with great sadness that we learned of Dr. David Scott’s recent death. Many of you will have known Dr. Scott and his family through their long legacy of providing care and community involvement in the Dufferin region. Dr. Scott grew up in Orangeville and followed in his father’s footsteps to study and then practice surgery locally.

He graduated in medicine from the University of Toronto (1956) with a Fellowship in General Surgery (1962). He and his wife Huda moved to Orangeville in 1963 where he joined the staff of the Dufferin Area Hospital as the first specialist in general surgery. He held the role of Chief of Staff several times during his career and was known by many as being a quiet, yet passionate diplomat.

He dedicated his life to improving the health and wellness of the community. He also played a key role in physician recruitment with the Greater Dufferin Area Physician Search Committee and played a lead role in health planning in the area. Dr. Scott’s expertise also led him to get involved in planning and improvements at the municipal and county level.

To honor his legacy, Headwaters Health Care Centre began an annual Award called the Dr. David Scott Award. It is presented annually to recognize individuals or groups who have gone above and beyond to improve the overall health and wellness in Dufferin-Caledon.

We offer our condolences to the family, friends and former colleagues of Dr. Scott at this difficult time. We are proud to continue honoring his legacy.
