Headwaters Physicians Dr. Stephen & Dr. Stephanie Milone Honored as Outstanding Doctors by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario

ORANGEVILLE, ON – September 16, 2020: Headwaters Health Care Centre Family Practice Physicians Dr. Stephen and Dr. Stephanie Milone have been selected as the 2020 Council: Community Family Practice Award recipients. This is one of only four annual College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Awards which honor outstanding physicians across the province.

The Milones have worked at Headwaters Health Care Centre since 2006 in the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Anesthesia. The dynamic duo have been the University of Toronto Resident Program Site Directors for over a decade; providing mentorship to countless physicians, medical students, and even local high school students.

In a nominator’s statement, Dr. Sharon Reece, noted “Rural communities need advocates and leaders like the Milones who not only pursue clinical excellence for themselves, but also share their passion with the next generation of physicians.”

Celebrated for their investment in mentoring others, the Milones have previously been the recipients of the Ontario Community Family Medicine Teachers of the Year Award (2010) and the Ontario Family Physicians of the Year Award (2014) as well as Headwaters’ Dr. David Scott Award (2017). Much of their work has been based on educating others including the innovation of an emergency simulation program at Headwaters Health Care Centre.

Avid volunteers, the Milones are involved in many forms of community services locally and internationally. Having lived in Dufferin-Caledon for 14 years, the Milones have volunteered their medical services to: Choice Youth Shelter, Family Transition Place, Soup Sisters Charity, and the Out of the Cold Shelter Program. Internationally, the Milones have founded a medical partnership with a missionary hospital in Herbertpur, India, providing support to medical staff and trainees.

In a nominator’s statement, Dr. Anna Davenport, noted “The wonderful irony of the Milones, if they are chosen for this award, they will not just place it on the wall, but they will use this opportunity to encourage others to reach out into their own communities to do the same!”

Dr. Peter Cino, Chief of Staff at Headwaters Health Care Centre, said “I have had the privilege of working with the Milones since they arrived at our hospital 14 years ago. This award does not come as surprise; you couldn’t meet two more dedicated, passionate educators and leaders. Our hospital is lucky to have physicians like them. Congratulations to you both.”

The official award ceremony took place virtually at a recent College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Council Meeting.
