About our Emergency Department and Headwaters Health Care Centre

Headwaters Health Care Centre is a medium-sized acute and complex continuing care facility located in the vibrant community of Orangeville, Ontario: a 30-minute drive north of Brampton, and 45 minutes from Toronto, Newmarket & Guelph. An 80-bed hospital, Headwaters opened in 1997 and is currently undergoing a major expansion and renovation project to support the rapidly-growing catchment area of 135,000 residents.

Headwaters’ Emergency Department is a fast-paced, team environment, with more than 40,000 ED visits per year, or approximately 130 visits per day. The hospital has been one of the early pay for performance EDs, and has excelled year-over-year with some of the lowest ED wait times in the Province. Our ED is divided into two sections: an acute area with 10 beds, and a Rapid Assessment Zone with five rooms and three reclining chairs. The ED is staffed with double coverage during the day and solo coverage on overnights, having moved to a six-doctor day format in 2015.

We are well supported by local specialists including: ENT, Ophthalmology, Ortho, Plastics, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Obs/Gyn & Anaesthesia. Our DI department was the first fully digital diagnostics department in North America, and we have excellent coverage for US and CT. RT is available in house 24/7.

Our patients are of varied acuity and complexity. We see many trauma patients in our institution and are well supported by Criticall in transferring patients to Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s. We also have a number of other strong clinical partnerships, which include William Osler Health System in Brampton/Etobicoke, and Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket to support with cardiac treatment and care.
