Plan of Care
Come
to the Hospital at the designated time and register at the Eaton
Ambulatory Care Unit Reception desk (off the main lobby). To
avoid delays, please have your health card ready. You
will be given your Hospital ID bracelet and escorted to the Day Surgery
Unit. A family member can accompany you.
The
Day Surgery Nurse will assess you, ask when you last had something to
eat/drink and will ensure all the necessary paperwork is on the chart. You
may have an intravenous (IV) started to provide fluids and to receive
medications. You may be given antibiotics (to fight infection) or Heparin
therapy (blood thinners).
Information
regarding what to expect after surgery and any special instructions are
given. If you are unsure of anything please ask questions.
Next
you will be escorted to the Operating Room (OR) holding area by the OR
Nurse who again assesses you and checks the chart for completeness. The
Anaesthetist will visit you to ask questions and start the IV if not
already done. This is the specially trained physician who administers your
medication and monitors your breathing, heart rate and blood pressure
during surgery.
The
Surgical Team headed by your Surgeon is a group of specially trained
professionals that provide a safe environment and perform your procedure.
Shortly after the surgery you will awaken in the
PACU (Post Anaesthetic Care Unit). A Registered Nurse with specialized
training in post-anaesthetic care will closely monitor you to ensure that
you recover safely. You will receive medication if you have any pain or
nausea. The Anaesthetist and the nurse will decide when you are ready to
be transferred to the surgical unit or home.
