Dr. Dan Mallin Awarded
the 2010 Dr. David Scott Award
Orangeville, ON,
June 17, 2010 –
The 2010 Dr. David Scott Award was presented to Dr. Dan Mallin at
Headwaters Health Care Centre’s Annual General Meeting for his work to
improve local access to medical services for Dufferin-Caledon residents.
The Dr. David Scott Award is presented to an individual or group whose
volunteer contributions have improved the overall health and well-being
of our community. The recipient is selected by the hospital’s Board of
Directors.
Fifteen years ago, Dr. Mallin opened his family practice in Grand
Valley. His concern with providing local access to medical services led
to the creation of the Highlands
Health Network and the family health team
which enabled the hiring of many health care providers including a
Mental Health Therapist, a Dietitian, Diabetes Educator, Nurse
Practitioner, and a Respiratory Therapist. The Dufferin Area Family
Health Team today includes Highlands Health Network, Orangeville Family
Medical Centre, Fifth Avenue Medical Clinic and Grand Valley
Medical-Dental Centre.
“Dr. Mallin was selected for his efforts to bring health services to
rural areas and the meaningful impact those services have made for many
individuals and families across our community,” says Louise Kindree,
Chair, Board of Directors, Headwaters Health Care Centre. “His work to
bring new health services to Grand Valley, including a pharmacy and a
lab, has helped many young families and seniors who live in a community
without public transportation or taxi service. Having one-stop medical
care means a lot to all Dufferin area residents”.
Working with the hospital, the family health teams and the University of
Toronto, Dr. Mallin created a Medical Residency Program that has
contributed to the recruitment of nearly 10 new Family Physicians for
Orangeville, Caledon and Grand Valley.
"By bringing together the family physicians in the Family Health Team,
Dr. Mallin has enabled greater after-hours access for patients and
improved physician satisfaction,” says Cholly Boland, President and CEO,
Headwaters Health Care Centre.
Dr. Mallin devotes many hours to training residents, lecturing and
demonstrating innovation and leadership. “He has contributed greatly to
the well-being of residents of Dufferin,” says Boland.
The public is invited to provide comments and suggestions about hospital
services. Please contact Cholly Boland, President and CEO, Headwaters
Health Care Centre at 519.941.2702 ext. 2200.
