Dr. David Scott Award Accepting Nominees

Orangeville, ON, March 26, 2009 – Recognize a leader in healthcare by nominating them for the 2009 Dr. David Scott Award. Headwaters Health Care Centre is asking members of the public to nominate individuals or groups that have made a significant contribution to the health and well-being of residents in Dufferin-Caledon.

This is a chance to say ‘thank you’ and recognize those who have made a difference. The award was established in honor of Dr. David Scott’s many years of dedicated service to his profession and the community. Since 2000, Headwaters has recognized the significant contributions of award winners for their work in improving access to after-hours and long-term care; charitable and volunteer support; physician recruitment; and programs for organ donation, and prevention and treatment of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Dr. Scott practiced general surgery in Orangeville from 1962 to 1997 and continues to provide surgical assist at Headwaters Health Care Centre. A life-long resident of Orangeville, Dr. Scott has provided outstanding leadership in health care in our community, and currently serves as a key member of the Greater Dufferin Area Physician Search Committee.

Past award winners have been recognized for developing awareness, improving access to care and spearheading volunteer and fundraising initiatives within our communities. Previous recipients of the Dr. David Scott Award include: Dr. Dirk Huyer in 2000 for his work with victims of sexual abuse; Erna Baniulis in 2001 for her work to improve long term care in our community; Ronnie Inglis in 2002 for her leadership in Emergency Services, Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, and organ donation; Dr. Faye Lindsey in 2003 for her work in physician recruitment; Headwaters Health Care Centre Auxiliaries (Orangeville and Shelburne sites) in 2004 for the significant contribution volunteers have made to the hospital for over fifty years; John (Doc) Gillies in 2005 for his charitable work in the community, including overseeing the construction of the new medical clinic; Don Stewart in 2006 for his outstanding contribution to the hospital, and  other community projects in Shelburne, many of which were in support of health care; Dr. David Knox in 2007 for improving access to care in the community by establishing an after-hours clinic; and Dori Ebel in 2008 for her fundraising and volunteer leadership with health care and children’s organizations, and her non-denominational spiritual work with the hospital’s chaplaincy program.

The award is granted to an individual or organization that has made a positive impact on the quality of local health care through their service to the community, leadership and/or advocacy of health care initiatives and services.

The deadline for nominations will be April 30, 2009. The winner will be presented with the award at the Hospital’s Annual General Meeting in June.
