Headwaters Elects New Board of Directors Members at Annual General Meeting

Orangeville, ON, June 22, 2009 – At the June hospital board meeting the Board of Directors approved the Medical Advisory Committee’s medical staff reappointments for 141 physicians in the departments of Anaesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Medicine, Pathology, Obstetrics, Surgery and Dental.

The Quality Assurance/Risk Management committee reported that the Hospital has completed phase 1 of 2 of a risk management assessment program provided by the Hospital’s insurance provider, HIROC. The Hospital uses the program to identify risk areas requiring action and focuses on preventable issues, including participating in the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) of Ontario’s “Prevent-It” campaign to reduce workplace injuries.

The Board of Directors approved the Hospital’s new non-urgent patient transfer protocol for ambulatory patients and non-medical transfers. Non-emergency ambulance transfers result in the need for hospitals to contract directly with patient transport services. This has resulted in added operating costs and increased liability to hospitals. Under Headwaters new policy, patients and/or their families will be required to provide their own transportation or pay the cost of a patient transport service for any transfers that are not required medically.

The Governance and Nominating Committee presented the new members of the Board of Directors seeking their first three-year term on the Board of Directors. They include:

·         Steven Desrocher, an Inglewood resident who is President of ASI Technologies Inc., an information technology professional services firm.

·         Terry Irwin, an Inglewood resident who is a retired Fire Chief of the Brampton Fire Department.

The following members of the Board of Directors stood seeking re-election:

·         Peter Harris practices income tax law with Cassel Brock & Blackwell LLP in Toronto. Peter is Chairman of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Taxation and Economics Committee. He has appeared on the CBC commenting on the federal budget.

·         Angella Hughes, President and CEO of Xogen Technologies Inc., in Orangeville.

·         Elizabeth Hull, a retired social services and health consultant with experience in community, municipal, provincial and federal government projects.

At the Hospital Annual General Meeting, the Chair of the Board and the President and Chief Executive Officer gave their reports and shared that patient satisfaction results for the Hospital continue to trend upward and all publicly reported wait times including general surgery, cataract surgery, CT scans and ER wait times, meet or exceed provincial targets.

The Auditor’s report and financial statements for the fiscal ending March 31, 2009 show a balanced budget in line with provincial requirements.

The 2009 recipient of the Dr. David Scott Award was announced at the meeting. The Award was presented to Mr. Larry Rankin of Orangeville for his contributions to improving accessibility for persons with disabilities in our community.
