Headwaters Breaks Ground on Exciting Expansion and Renovation

Yesterday, Headwaters Health Care Centre (Headwaters) gathered together its staff, physicians and volunteers, along with dignitaries, local health care leaders, donors and members of the community for an official ground breaking ceremony and celebrated the start of construction on a transformative expansion and renovation project to meet the growing health care needs of the community.
“This is an exciting time for health care in this community. Construction is underway on an expansion and renovation project that will bring greater access to the health care services this community relies on most,” said Rob Hamilton, Chair, Headwaters Health Care Board of Directors. “Thanks to support from our Foundation, generous and supportive donors, our community, the Ontario government, the Central West Local Health Integration Network, and our staff, physicians and volunteers, this project is going to have a tremendous, positive impact on everyone who comes through the doors of this hospital.”
The addition of the new space is the first major expansion of the hospital since it opened at its current location in 1997. A new, 8,700 square foot expansion will house important services like chemotherapy and oncology, infusion clinics, minor procedures and telemedicine.
“With a growing community and increasing demand for more care closer to home, we are seeing more patients every year,” said Liz Ruegg, President and CEO, Headwaters Health Care Centre. “This expansion and renovation will help us to ensure there is increased access to important health care services for this growing community. Bright, open spaces will also promote healing and wellness and modern, purpose-built areas will ensure our staff, physicians and volunteers continue to have the very best space and equipment to provide high-quality care to patients and families.”
Headwaters is also taking on an exciting renovation of 11,900 square feet of existing hospital space to add another operating room, improve reception and expand pre- and post-surgical recovery areas.
“This expansion and renovation could not come at a better time, and is a significant step towards ensuring an Exceptional Experience Every Time for each and every Headwaters patient,” said Dr. Somaiah Ahmed, Chief of Staff and VP, Medical Affairs. “The improvements and enhancements to this hospital will better equip and enable our physicians, nurses and clinical staff to continue to provide high quality and compassionate care, in collaboration with our partners, to optimize the health of our community.”
Following a highly competitive bid process, Headwaters selected Merit Contractors Niagara as the successful contractor for the expansion and redevelopment project. Merit has over 30 years of experience and expertise in managing a full range of commercial, industrial and institutional building projects, including the development of health care centres across Ontario.
“As we look to the future, it gives me such confidence to know we will continue to have our local hospital and health care providers here, close to where we live, work and play. The astounding success of the $16 million Commitment to Care Campaign, which helped make this expansion and renovation possible, proves how truly generous our Headwaters community is,” said Headwaters Health Care Foundation Board Chair Christopher Stewart. “Thank you to each and everyone one of our donors who made this day possible.”
